What a Day!

We left Benson this morning at about 7:15 in chilly weather. By 10 it had heated up and we all swapped out leggings and armies for shorts and short sleeve shirts. The roads were rolling with some great down hill soars. Tombstone was exactly as expected, a dusty downtown street with saloons on either side, emporia and old time photo shops, and cowboys looking for a gunfight. We didn’t stick around for one.

The last 10 miles before Bisbee were straight up hill – I think it was over 3,000 feet of climb. I took me 2 hours for just that 10 miles, but I made it (except for the .2 miles with a 9 percent grade – that warranted getting off and walking). I was rewarded by reaching the Continental Divide at 6030 feet — the highest we’ll be on this trip, and then another 4 miles flying down crazy curvy roads into Bisbee — the town where time has stood still. It’s a hippie town — all the people are old, have long white hair and the men also have long white beards – it should be renamed Rip Van Winkle Town. I did see the Owl Lady and her car, which is apparently a thing here in Bisbee. She didn’t have time to give me the backstory. Tomorrow is a 90 mile day, but the first 20 miles are down hill, so really it’s a 70 mile day. I think we cross back and forth time zones several times as we dip in and out of NM and AZ. Or maybe that is on Wednesday . . .
