The Heatwave Got Me

Last evening, we pulled into the Space Age hotel. Coincidentally, the x-county group from the Woman’s Tour was also staying there. They had departed San Diego 3 days earlier than we did, but they are averaging shorter days than we are. We had some good chats with them about how their ride was going. It’s actually 200 miles longer, but an extra 10 days. I briefly considered jumping ship, but decided that I like the group I’m with.

We left Gila Bend early this morning, but after a 20 mile uphill into the wind climb, we both pulled ourselves off the road for the next segment, which had a 7 mile stretch with no shoulder and lots of trucks. We picked up again at a water stop and then on to lunch, but by that time, it was over 90 and felt like 100. I read that there’s an even bigger heat wave headed our way. So, Rob and I cut out the last 12 miles too. We’re crazy, but not dumb! Tomorrow we’ll get an earlier start and hopefully be in Tucson before mid-afternoon.

  1. Kirsten and Rob, it is hard to envision you biking in extreme heat as I sit here in Morristown midst cold and snow. I sure do admire your stamina, enthusiasm, and sense of adventure. Glad to see you have a good handle on staying well rather than pushing it. My best,
    Carol
