Yesterday was a new kind of challenge. Did I mention that Rob and I are the slowest riders? We had a ferry to catch at 11 AM and it was 40 miles to get there. He and I left extra early (7 am), because we figured that even at our slow pace of 12 mph, we would make it in time. Riding was flat and easy, cool weather, and no wind. We left Mississippi at 10 miles and coasted into Alabama. We arrived at the water stop at 22 miles with plenty of time to get to the ferry by 11. But, what we didn’t count on was the 3.5 mile long bridge with crazy “anti-destination” winds! When we got within 3 miles of the bridge, the weather started getting rough, our tiny bikes were tossed. If not for the spirit of our follow through, our timing would be lost (our timing would be lost). Seriously, though, getting up to and then up and over the bridge set us back significantly — I could hardly muster 9 MPH going down hill! And, it turns out the ferry was 42 miles, not 40 — those 2 extra miles matter! We barely made it to the ferry on time. But we did, and it was a fabulous ride across the Mobile Bay. We had lunch in state park and then meandered our way another 20 miles to the Gulf Shores. And, just like that, we’re breathing in the ocean air and riding along coast.
