Yikes!

Today’s ride was from Navasota to Cleveland which is about 75 miles. The nice part of the ride was that much of it traversed through the Sam Houston National Forest. Lots of greenery and winding roads, and still many ups and downs (I was mistaken when I said we left the hill country 2 days ago!). Unfortunately, however, the thruway through the Sam Houston National Forest is exactly that — a thruway— it was a 2 lane road where the speed limit was 60 mph (and you know what that means!) — and, it wasn’t just cars – in fact, it was mostly pick up trucks and semi’s passing us. AND, the shoulder was about 18 inches — barely wider than our handlebars. I actually preferred being on the interstate where we had a 12 foot lane for our bicycles. In some places today there was no shoulder at all. Eddie (the dinosaur from yesterday) was strapped to my camel (the water container I wear on my back) and he was scared out of his wits.

We did have a nice lunch in the hangar owned by Amy and Bob who are friends of the owners of Cycle of Life — she is a cyclist and he is a pilot — in their hangar they had both a Gyro Copter and an RV. Clearly they travel in style.

Tomorrow we head to Lumberton and only 2 nights left in Texas!
